This survey and the accompanying AI companion diary are part of the research project ‘Anthropomorphic AI and Emergent Vulnerabilities’, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The research project combines an empirical study component with users of AI chatbots, along with socio-legal analysis in order to assess the uses, benefits, risks and harms posed by such chatbots. The aim is to engage with users of AI chatbots in order to better understand and clarify the risk landscape, recommend design measures and to strengthen legal protections for individuals. You can find more information about this project here.

The purpose of this survey and the AI companion diary is to gather insights on how you use AI chatbots, how AI chatbot interactions develop or change over time, address risk factors, and identify aspects in the need of deeper investigation. You must be above 18 in order to participate.

This survey will take place over the course of three months, with survey forms sent out to you every three weeks. This means that there will be a total of four surveys for you to complete within this period.  There are screening questions in order to ensure that you meet the minimum criteria for participating in the research project.

The principal investigator of this research project is Dr. Sue Anne Teo from the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and any questions or concerns can be directed to her at: sue_anne.teo@rwi.lu.se. Co-researchers of the project are Dr. Karen Louise Grova Søilen (Lund University) and Prof. Dr. Mia Liinason (Lund University).

This survey will gather personally identifiable information from you for purposes of sending reminders and for sending you your participation voucher. Your data will be pseudonymised at the data analysis stage and none of the responses will be traceable to your personally identifiable data. Data gathered in this research project will be processed and stored in line with the General Data Protection Regulation. We will specifically store the research project data on a high security solution called LUSEC, offered by Lund University. You will be asked to provide your informed consent to take part in this survey and you will be able to exercise your right to withdraw from the research project at any time.

You will receive a SEK150 voucher (approx USD15) as a token of appreciation for your participation. The survey will take around 10-20 minutes to complete.
